“Who’s Rocking Your Boat? The People Who Calm 🌈or Create Storms in Your Life
Share
The people in your life determine the direction of your journey. The Bible shows us that friendships are more than just companionship—they have spiritual weight.
Proverbs 13:20 reminds us, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” The people you associate with can either calm your storms or create them.
Look at the story of Jonah (Jonah 1). Jonah was running from God, and the sailors who welcomed him into their boat paid a heavy price. The storm that surrounded them wasn’t their fault—it was Jonah’s disobedience. Despite their best efforts to row to safety, they nearly lost everything. It wasn’t until they threw Jonah overboard that the seas calmed, and peace returned.
Now contrast that with Jesus in the boat (Mark 4:35-41). When the storm raged and the disciples panicked, Jesus brought calm. His presence turned fear into faith, and the very winds and waves obeyed Him. The message is clear: who is in your boat matters. Some people bring storms into your life, while others bring peace.
Ask yourself: who are you allowing into your boat? Are they aligned with God’s purpose for your life, or are they pulling you off course? Are they building you up in faith, or are they quietly sinking your potential? Sometimes, the hardest part of growth is letting go of the relationships that no longer align with where God is leading you.
But here’s the ultimate truth: even with the best people around you, your peace and security come from Jesus. Psalm 127:1 says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” Without Him, no amount of effort or strategy will bring lasting success or peace.
Take time today to evaluate your relationships. Pray for wisdom to identify the “Jonahs” who may be causing unnecessary chaos, and for courage to make changes where needed. At the same time, invite Jesus to be the captain of your boat. Let His peace guide your journey and anchor your soul. With Him, no storm can shake you, and no wave can sink you.
